God Is Home Base

“Be to me a rock of refuge, to which I may continually come…” (Psalm 71:3).

God does not tire. Too often we think of God like we think of ourselves. We drain. We fatigue. But God is not as man. His energy is infinite, unwavering, and unlimited.

The Psalmist grew weary. He was in need of strength, especially as he aged. He was concerned for his future, worried his limited strength would not be enough for the future years he was bound to endure.

The request is simple. The Psalmist wants God to be a rock of refuge for him. One to which he “may continually come.”

The Lord is our rock of refuge. Though we come to Him continually, He does not tire. He does not grow weary. He does not slumber or sleep. He does not faint. When my hands are tired and I feel perplexed with the pains of life, He is unmoved.

He is not even as the sun, powerful but fading. No, He does not fade. To Him we may continually come. He can be our lifelong source of strength, foundation, glory.

I need Him badly. I need this continual source and strength. When I was a child we called this “home base.” During the game, home base was the place you were safe, the place you could rest. God is our home base to which we may continually come.
