“Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised in the city of our God! His holy mountain” (Psalm 48:1).

“Walk about Zion, go around her, number her towers, consider well her ramparts, go through her citadels, that you may tell the next generation that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever” (Psalm 48:12–14).

The glory of the Christian is Christ. The glorious work of Christ is His cross on Mount Calvary of Jerusalem, also known as Zion.

The LORD’s holy mountain is worthy of exploration, as the psalmist sang. To go around her, to number her towers, to consider well her ramparts is to explore the city.

I take this as a commissioning to explore the cross of Christ. As I “go around her,” studying the various facets of Jesus’ work there, I become amazed. I grow in appreciation for Christ and His work. As a result, I have something to “tell the next generation.”

My method is informed by the message, the cross of Christ. As the details of His work get into my heart, my message grows stronger. Romans, Galatians, Ephesians — they all inform me more fully of what Jesus accomplished on the cross. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John — they all announce to me the events of the cross.

I must go around and around the details surrounding that day. I must consider the strength of what Christ accomplished that day. I must go through the results of His imputed righteousness won for me that day.

And I must tell the next generation of His great work.
