In starting a short series on the Holy Spirit and His gifts, the deity of the Spirit is a good starting point. There are many things to consider about the Spirit, but His identity is foundational. Debated less often than the deity of Christ, the deity of the Spirit is important to the Christian faith. We believe in the triunity of God, so the divinity of the Spirit is a must doctrine for us. Here, I’d like to provide some Biblical evidence for the deity of the Spirit.

Exodus 16-17

This week we look to Exodus chapters 16 and 17. At this point, in the book of Exodus, God has delivered his people from their Egyptian captivity. The three sets of three plagues have been brought upon Egypt. The angel of death came upon Egypt for the 10th and final plague. The Passover occurred, and the people of Israel were commanded to go, given riches and wealth and treasure from the Egyptian people and urged to go on their way. God had redeemed a people for himself.

On Israel's ancient Day of Atonement, the high priest, after sacrificing for his own sins, did three things. First, he offered a sacrifice for the sins of the people. Second, he took the blood of the sacrifice and went into the innermost room of the tabernacle, the Holy of Holies, where the glory of God dwelt.
